Pinterest’s algorithm favors inclusivity— here’s what you need to know now
Are you ready for change?
Stay ahead of the curve with Pinterest’s inclusive update
Once again, Pinterest’s new algorithm takes a step towards representative search results as of September 7, 2023! Yes— you heard me. If you don’t fall into the category of “thin white girl”, you may have struggled in the past to see search results of people that look like you.
Annie Ta, the head of inclusive products at Pinterest, shared that the company made these changes when they realized that Pinterest users were adding extra descriptive words to their searches to find results that matched their needs.
This isn’t the first time Pinterest made a change to the algorithm in the name of inclusivity and representation. In 2018, Pinterest added the feature of skin tone filtering, so people of different complexions could find beauty results that catered to their needs. A similar feature for hair pattern filtering was implemented in 2020. Pinterest users of all backgrounds appreciated these new features.
To improve search results for the plus size community, Pinterest has trained over 5 billion (yes— BILLION) images to help recognize and categorize different body types in search results.
Like always, these changes have shown positive results among Pinterest users. These forward thinking & considerate changes have in women’s fashion has improved over 4 times since adding these changes to the algorithm, according to Ha.
So far, this change is specific to women’s fashion search results, but will expand into other categories in due time. ''
Cheers to Pinterest’s commitment to diversity!
Let’s reconvene next week to talk about another update👀
